Once upon a time I would’ve told you I didn’t care about Gigi Hadid. This is because I am lazy sometimes and whenever a new name pops up, it’s very hard not to go, “Too many! Too many new names!” before retreating to a retirement home. But then I usually get wise and realize the times are constantly a-changing, and I need to get with it.
Enter: my newfound appreciation for Gigi Hadid.
Yesterday, a Twitter user lashed out at the model, saying she should “practice how to walk properly instead of having a new boyfriend every three weeks.”
Which actually doesn’t make any sense at all. I mean, I know that. You know that. But clearly this person didn’t know that, so Gigi Hadid clapped back like a boss.
“I’ve dated three guys in three years, hun,” she tweeted. “My walk can always get better; I hope the unrelated bitterness in your heart can, too.”
YA BURNT.
Sadly, the whole exchange has been deleted, but it will live on in our hearts and also on every publication that wrote about it. As mentioned by Vogue, Hadid hasn’t been a stranger to saying what’s on her mind, but honestly this is just making me like her even more.
“I’ve always been someone that stands up for myself,” she’s said in the past. “To the point where my publicist will sometimes say, ‘Sometimes it’s better not to say anything.’ And I’m like, ‘The limelight means you’re supposed to to hide? And not stand your ground?’ That doesn’t make sense to me. What’s the point of social media if you’re only going to respond to things that make you look great; if you’re not willing to stand up for yourself, people take advantage of that.”
And she is correct! Like, hello: I don’t think anybody here is feeding the trolls, but when a clapback is necessary, a clapback is necessary. Like, who was this random person talking smack about Gigi’s walk and dating life? The answer: somebody whose facts needed to be clarified. And that’s exactly what Hadid did, and reasonably, too — though while still adding a “hun” into the mix just to drive the point home, thank you very much.
So more of this, everyone! Cool, calm, well-typed clarifications, please and thank you! That, or the gif I love so much of Rihanna rolling up the window. Either, or. Surprise me.
