Ever since Hailey Bieber started sharing her beauty and makeup routine on social media, she’s become a trendsetter. Almost any product or technique she uses goes viral, including a TikTok video where she does the Mary Phillips contour trick otherwise known as underpainting. (This is when one applies their contour underneath their foundation.) In case you don’t know, Mary Phillips is a celebrity makeup artist, and her clients include Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner, Jennifer Lopez, Priyanka Chopra, and more. After Phillip’s technique went viral, the makeup artist started her own TikTok page explaining how she does this technique.

“To me, it makes more sense,” Phillips explains in her video. “It’s like laying down the bones under the skin – the contour and the highlight being the bones, and skin being the foundation.”
Here’s What She Uses
First, Phillips uses the Westman Atelier Face Trace Cream Contour Stick and applies it to the hollow of her cheeks, forehead and jaw. Using a thinner brush, she applies the contour to her nose. It doesn’t have much coverage but it will give you a healthy radiant complexion.
