Earn Some Good Karma

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. “Winston Churchill.

Life is full of difficulty. From devastating natural disasters to life changing disease, hardship and strife constantly surround us and can affect almost anyone. Misfortune does not discriminate by race, gender, species or creed. It can affect a child in a country that you have never seen or even a person you speak with everyday.

What makes these trying times bearable are those people that selflessly give of themselves and seek to support others in any way that they can. They may spend an hour a week collecting items and contributions or they may sit and read to a bed ridden person. But one thing is certain, that no matter how small the gesture, these actions help in profound and often miraculous ways.

According to the Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating, approximately 84% of people age 15 and older make at least one financial donation a year, reaching an average of $10 Billion annually. We support everything from environmental campaigns to cultural events, and every year the amount of people donating their time and money continues to increase. While this is commendable, there are still many other ways that we can make a difference that will not only benefit others, but also ourselves.

If you have been putting off lending aid to a charity or cause, here are a few reasons that you should start:

  • It can open up new opportunities. You can develop important life skills and work experience.
  • You may meet a new friend.
  • You will become a part of the community.
  • It looks good on a resume.
  • It will provide a sense of achievement.
  • It will motivate your family and friends to take action.
  • You may discover new interests and hobbies.
  • It will improve your confidence.
  • It will bring you Good Karma.

 The most important reason:

YOUR ACTIONS WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

There are thousands of volunteer positions and causes you can support. Please take thirty minutes of your life and find the one that best suits you. All it may take is an hour of your week or one afternoon a month. And always keep in mind that the next time disaster strikes, it may be you in need of a helping hand.
