6 Love-Spreading Valentine’s Day Ideas

Hate Valentine's Day? Check yourself! It's a day about love – you don't have to participate in the chocolate-buying, lingerie-wearing, romcom-watching frenzy if you don't want to. And if you don't want to, you're in the right place. Here is a list of 6 ways to make this day a celebration of love in your life, no matter if you're on a dating detox or recently broken hearted or whatever. Here's how to spread some love and have fun.

Profess your love to yourself

Whether you wake up alone or beside someone, start your day by saying I love you, out loud, to yourself. Look in the mirror, into your own eyes, clearing any negative thoughts about your appearance or the state of the room behind you, and say I love you, like you mean it. If you feel like a wacko saying I love you to yourself, is it reasonable to expect the same expression from another? Now kiss the mirror. DO IT! Bonus points!

Make a Valentine's Day resolution

Kind of like a New Years resolution, but one that is exclusively a declaration of self love. Something you can do, today, and for the rest of the entire year, do be more loving to yourself. You could probably think of a few departments of your life that could use some more TLC. Are you a chronic self-deprecator? Keep dating unavailable men? Are you addicted to gossiping? Holding a grudge against someone you actually really miss? Choose your V-day reso to be a constant effort that increases your love for yourself.

Spread some love

Make it part of your mission today to spread some love to the people around you. Go out of your way to make someone's day with a random act of kindness! (Here are 10 good ones). Leaving a loving mark on those you come in contact with today can be as simple as being positive, smiling and making eye contact.

Loving your body is all about perspective. Today, appreciate your body parts and their functions for the things they enable you to do – hold onto things, get from point a to point b, see the world, hug your friends, etc.
Today, love your body for being the vessel that lets you live your life how you want.

Express gratitude

All good moods start with being thankful for something in your life, so if you're struggling to embrace this V-day, start by thinking of a few things you're super grateful for. Reach out and tell your family members and friends you love them – especially if you haven't talked to them for a while. Leave a post it on your room mate's bathroom mirror saying they're a great room mate. Bake cookies for your co-workers. Say thank you in your own creative way and make it fun.

Eat chocolate
