When And How To Wear Crop Tops

Crop tops “ they’re here this summer, and they’ll stay until fall. And while you may think you can escape the controversial look, you’ll probably be tempted to make it work on days when it’s so hot that the idea of tucking anything in seems like a nightmare. So instead of slamming the style, we’ll lend you a hand. Here’s how to make crop tops work for you and when you can get away with wearing them.

1. Wear with a high-waisted bottom
Unless you’re at the beach, you’ll want to avoid exhibitionism, so pair crop tops with high-waisted pants to escape over-sharing. Regardless of how comfortable you are with your abs, crop tops don’t look balanced with low-rise jeans, so keep them balanced with a pair of skinny, cropped denim for a perfect summer 2012 feel.

2. Wear t-shirts casually
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a formal “ or even semi-formal “ event that will bestow upon you its crop top blessing. Like Kelly Kapowski in the trend’s hey-day, crop tops are reserved for casual events only “ especially if worn in t-shirt or tank top form. Even cropped blouses, you need to be careful. Unless you pair a camisole underneath, you’re still not formalwear appropriate.

3. Don’t assume crop tops should be baggy
Prada and Dolce and Gabbana were just a few of the designers who showcased crop tops in a fitted, ladylike manner. Thus, don’t gravitate only to casual looks in hopes of making the trend accessible. A floral fitted crop top worn with a high-waisted maxi skirt evokes the quintessential ˜70s feel, while a matching set (cropped tank with a pencil skirt) can take you through the city on a summer afternoon. Just don’t attempt it at the office: as forgiving as your workplace dress code may be, you’d be hard-pressed to find a boss that will allow for a bared midriff.

4. Wear what flatters you
Some of us (like this writer) just can’t wear a crop top. So if you don’t feel comfortable, don’t think your best assets are being flattered, or just plain don’t like the trend, don’t force yourself to wear one. Unlike neon tones or bracelets upon bracelets “ two of summer’s biggest looks “ crop tops don’t work for everybody. So if you start to feel like they’re not your thing, focus on an accessible trend or a find the perfect one for you.
