What’s Her Secret? Afiya Francisco, Style Expert

If Afiya Francisco’s face looks familiar then it is. The style expert is a regular on TV, lending her savvy and chic fashion knowledge to Canadians on popular shows such as Global News’ The Morning Show, CBC’s the Steven & Chris Show and Entertainment Tonight Canada.

She recently started an online magazine called The Style Guide which, in our opinion, is pretty darn cool and a must-read for fashion and beauty lovers. Plus, any chance we can get to pick the brain of a stylist as talented as Afiya we’ll jump at “ fingers crossed we can go shopping with her one day. This lady is definitely someone you want to get to know better and learn her secrets to life, success and, especially, style.

Being a fashion stylist is usually portrayed on TV as a glamorous job, but what are the challenging aspects of the profession people don’t know about?

It’s a lot of running around and schlepping. Carrying clothes, steaming, returns. It can be very physical.

You’ve recently launched an online magazine The Style Guide. Where did this idea come from?

My career began as an editor (Canadian House & Home, LOULOU) and I’ve always had a deep love for magazines. That, coupled with a growing appreciation of the philosophy less but better, sparked the idea. Everything that is purchased and brought into the home should bring joy “ not buying just to have and rampantly following trends. So everything shown in The Style Guide is very thoughtfully researched and considered, and while it’s all subjective, nothing is in there randomly.

How do you manage juggling being a wife, mom of two boys, and maintaining an active career?

It can be very challenging but I’m really lucky to have a very strong support system. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle and I constantly work to fit in every piece. It would be near impossible without help.

Lead the world to peace and compassion.

What are three things in your wardrobe you cannot live without and why?

1. Nothing is better than a quality white t-shirt. It’s a great canvas and, when it fits well, it lends an effortless foundation to a look.

2. Menswear style flats are my favourite, for day and night. They’re unexpected, cool and practical “ trifecta of perfection.

3. Tunic dresses are amazing in summer with heels or flats and chic thrown over pants come fall and winter. I’m a fan of year-round essentials.

If you could create a recipe for happiness, what would it contain and why?

A strong serving of compassion, gratitude and love, balanced with time outdoors, time spent quietly, and garnished with eating fresh and exercise.

Name one famous person (celebrity or historical figure) you would like to have a brunch with and why?

Eckhart Tolle and Prince. Imagine that conversation!
