Summer Trends: How To Wear The Midi-Skirt

The midi-skirt is a grey area: yes, it’s a must-try in summer 2012, but its unconventional length can cause issues when it comes which shoes to wear, what tops to pair it with and how it can help to create a clean, flattering silhouette. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. So instead of seeking refuge in your comfort zone, here’s how you can introduce the midi skirt to your everyday summer wardrobe.

1. When in doubt, make it A-line
A pencil midi skirt can seem daunting, so to help maintain this season’s airy feel, pair a flowy A-line midi skirt with a sheer button-up blouse for a vintage-inspired look. Burberry’s crisp military green skirt was paired with a brown leather belt and roomy printed shirt, and then topped with sturdy wedge heels for a ˜70s vibe. Meanwhile, Jil Sander evoked the early ˜50s aesthetic with a white midi skirt worn with white heels and a blue and white tee. Since A-line skirts are often the most flattering cut regardless, it’s easier to adopt the midi when worn in a more conventional sense “ though a pencil cut can look just as sharp with pumps or wedge heels.

2. Keep shirts tucked in
Since midi skirts hide most of the leg, you’ll want to create a defined silhouetted by tucking in shirts or donning a belt. Alexander McQueen’s collection channeled the 1940s thanks to belted jackets worn with a ruffled midi style, while Burberry kept all of their looks belted, tucked in and clean-looking. If you still don’t want to draw attention to your waist, belt an un-tucked shirt from the outside so you can help define your shape, but won’t draw as much attention to your stomach if you’re hoping to avoid that.

3. Begin by wearing heels
Since it’s important to elongate yourself, you may want to start by donning heels since midi skirts can make you seem short. Luckily, the type of heels  don’t matter, and summer 2012 collections were the perfect proof of shoe diversity. While Carven featured pumps, Burberry paired styles with ankle boots. However, don’t limit yourself to heels if you’re taller or if your skirt hits slightly above calf length. Suno showcased socks and flats, while Jonathan Saunders boasted open-toe ankle boots. Just avoid flip-flops at all cost, since regardless of what you pair them with, they offer your feet no support whatsoever.
