How to Wear Fall’s Hottest Trends

World MasterCard Fashion Week kicked off with a runway show from Holt Renfrew, Canada’s luxury retailer, showcasing what’s hot in stores now. The perfectly-styled runway looks included all the top brands and trends for this fall/winter season, including Gucci, Diane von Furstenberg and Rag & Bone.

You don’t have to splurg on these high-end labels, but take note on how each look was put together.

Check out some of our favourite outfits and why they work.

Bright Bolds

Clutch: Ela
Skirt: Diane von Furstenberg
Shoes: Manolo Blahnik

Bright colours aren’t just for summer! The bold colour trend has followed us into fall. This look from Diane von Furstenberg shows us how pairing two statement pieces, like the blouse and skirt, together actually work.  Furstenberg described this collection as “Glamorous at a moment’s notice,” with pieces that can be thrown together quickly and always look chic.

Matchy Matchy

Less is more doesn’t apply this season. Excess is success! Match your jacket to your pants in an eye-catching print. Accessorize with colours from the same palette as your print for a perfectly matched look. The pajama trend (head to toe in the same print) will be one of 2013’s biggest trends. We also saw it in this week’s spring shows, including Pink Tartan‘s S/S 13.

Preppy Prints

MSGM

Top: MSGM
Blouse: MSGM
Pants: MSGM
Shoes: Kate Spade
Purse: Ela

If your work wardrobe could use a little updating, this trend is spot-on. Layer a printed sweater, like this floral from MSGM, over your button-up and trousers. These blue slacks are a great alternative to black or grey. MSGM is still a fairly new brand, only four years old, but their take on prints and beautiful colour palettes will surely make their pieces must-haves for every fashionista’s wardrobe.

Rock N’ Roll

Alexander Wang

Necklace: Brunello Cucinelli
Shirt: T by Alexander Wang
Vest: rag & bone
Pants: rag & bone
Purse: Mulberry
Shoes: rag & bone

Metal and leather are fall’s top trends. Stores are stocked with motorcycle boots decorated with studs and bling this season. Not only are they fun, but they make you feel like you can kick some serious butt! This season, you’ll also see a lot of pants or leggings with paneling on the sides, whether they are in leather, or print, like these from rag & bone. David Neville and Marcus Wainwright’s brand, rag & bone, is THE label for the cool, urban hipster.

Textured Textiles

Gucci

Dress: Gucci
Necklace: Alexis Bittar
Shoes: Tom Ford

Frida Giannini wanted Gucci’s fall/winter collection to exude a confident romance; full of dark plum, black and espresso tones and plush velvets. This green dress is so beautiful because of the way the light hits the texture of the velvet. When choosing your holiday party cocktail numbers, go for lush fabrics!

Pretty in Pink

Armani

Coat: Armani
Gloves: Holt Renfrew
Shoes: Burberry

When choosing a winter coat, most of us lean towards black, blue or brown tones. But, this season is all about colour. Ditch the neutrals and take a chance with a pink, purple or yellow! This coat from Armani has a great A-line silhouette, flattering on any body type.
