Hair Tips for All Occasions

Whether it’s a hot date or a family brunch, this hair guide will ensure your locks match your plans.

Date night

The idea on date night is to wow him, and the best way to do that is with volume. (Think Victoria’s Secret model, not Pam Anderson in Baywatch). Wash your hair with a volume-boosting shampoo and then apply a root-lifting spray before blow-drying with a round brush. Once dry, set your hair with jumbo-sized Velcro rollers for soft waves that aren’t overdone. Leave them in for at least 15 minutes, spraying with a light hairspray to set. (But be sure not to go overboard with the hairspray” especially if you want him to picture running his hands through your locks.)

Job interview

When you’re in an interview situation, you want to avoid looking overdone. The idea is to show that you are professional and polished. Sleek hair, whether worn down or up in a pony, is a subtle way to display those qualities”and lets you (not your hair) do the talking. To achieve this look, spray wet hair with a smoothing, heat-protective spray, and then blow-dry with a paddle brush. Finish with a drop or two of frizz-taming serum.

Girls’ night out

You’re putting on your party dress and dipping into the pink champagne with your closest girlfriends, so why not use this night to have fun with your hair, too? Experiment with playful headbands, clip-in feathers or sparkly hairspray that is sure to set the tone for your night on the town.

Black tie event

A chic chignon shows class and elegance. Start with clean, dry hair gathered at the nape of your neck, as if you are going to put it in a low ponytail. (You may want to spray with a smoothing product for added control.) Twist gathered hair up and secure with bobby pins. Add interest around your face by creating a side bang and securing with an elegant jewelled bobby pin.

Sunday brunch

We’ll admit it: sometimes Sunday morning sees us with tousled hair from the night before (not to mention a killer headache). Sound familiar? To undo some of the damage from Saturday night shenanigans, soak hair with a leave-in conditioning treatment and let it sit while you have your coffee. Comb through any tangles as you rinse it out. Let it air dry (or just blow-dry your roots) and then fold into a neat braid. It’s a low-maintenance yet lovely way to wear your hair for a laidback Sunday.
