Zoe Kravitz Opens Up About Eating Disorder

Zoe Kravitz covers the latest issue of Complex magazine, where she opens up about her struggles with an eating disorder. She reveals that she first battled anorexia has a teenager and says her issues largely stemmed from being thrown into fame (her dad is Lenny Kravitz and her mom is actress Lisa Bonet.

“I had a really hard time when I was 16, 17, 18. I started with the eating disorder in high school¦.Just [a hard time] loving myself¦ I think it was part of being a woman, and being surrounded by [fame]. I don’t think it was about the fame, but I think it was definitely about being around that world, seeing that world. I felt pressured.”

The eating disorder returned in 2013 while she was filming The Road Within, a role that required her to lose weight.

“My parents got really scared for me to go back down that road. It was fucked up, man. You could see my rib cage. I was just trying to lose more weight for the film but I couldn’t see: You’re there. Stop. It was scary.”

Kravitz credits her Lolawolf bandmates for keeping her sane, and goes on to say that she understands the unique position she’s been put in and ins thankful that she gets to create art and make a living from it, no questions asked.

“There’s this like ˜American Dream’”you want this life. It’s dangled in front of you. It’s this thing: You can’t have this, but look how cool it is. I totally get it. I’d probably have a certain amount of anger toward that [if I was in that position]¦ Sometimes it’s difficult for me to enjoy the fame. I guess you just have to trust that you did something awesome in a past life, like saved a kid from a burning home.”
