Ugly No More

After months of speculation, ABC has officially pulled the plug on its former primetime darling, Ugly Betty, announcing that after this season, life at Mode will be no more. The network has even decided to cut the fourth season from 22 to 20 episodes, leaving less time to fans to bid adieu to their favourite poncho-wearing intern with a heart of gold. (Harsh.)Though ratings have been waning, you can’t help but feel a pang of sadness for the show that once garnered critical acclaim (Golden Globes and Emmys galore) and painted the fashion industry with a comical-yet-surprisingly accurate brush. (Minus the staged pregnancies and weird love triangles. Or . . . maybe that wasn’t such a long shot after all.)So now the real question of the hour: what about Betty? Will she end up with the man of her dreams? Will the braces finally come off? Will she move up the corporate ladder and oust the hierarchy once responsible for her misery? (As a non-watcher of the show, I apologize for the generalizations “ but I’m pretty sure I’m on the right track, aren’t I?) Now it’s up to you to tune in to make Betty’s swan song the season worth watching “ or at least to give her the send-off she deserves. After all, it’s not every day that a show values the importance of inner beauty, addresses social issues or offers the comedic stylings of Vanessa Williams. But personally? I’m still hoping for a return of the poncho.
