What’s Her Secret? Hockey Wives Star Maripier Morin

We recently caught up with TV host and personality Maripier Morin at a U by Kotex event to help #SaveTheUndies where we had a rather hilarious conversation about the one thing that all of us women have in common but still don’t always want to talk about: periods. For some reason, this common denominator between us millennials is something that is still pretty taboo and this needs to change!

The Hockey Wives beauty led the conversation, opening up discussions that helped all of us realize that we really are not alone in any of the crazy, horrible, embarrassing experiences that we go through during our time of the month. Kotex’s goal is to not only to save us one pair of panties at a time with their awesome line of period protection, but also to raise awareness about women’s health and hygiene so that future generations of women don’t have to go through the same trauma that we have (that trauma often being leaking into your favourite pair of lacy booty shorts).

After our share session, we were able to sit down with Maripier and get the scoop on her beauty secrets and how she deals with having a long distance relationship with her fiancé©, Vancouver Canucks player Brandon Prust.

29Secrets: What’s your basic daily beauty routine?

Maripier Morin: Basic? Oh my god, there’s so much shit (laughs). It’s a constant evolution of trying to make my skin better. So sometimes I go overboard using way too many products and then sometimes I just stop and don’t do anything. I’ve realized that face spray is a good thing to rehydrate my skin. Caudalie does a really good one. I always have one in my purse. Sometimes it’s aloe or lavender or rose spray but I feel like it all really helps my skin. Otherwise, moisturizer, wrinkle creams, eye cream, Blistex. I always have chapstick in my purse, always. It’s all about hydration because I don’t drink water so I have to somehow hydrate in another way.

As a brand ambassdar for Revlon, what are three makeup products you can’t live without?

My Skinlights from Revlon, my red Stand Out lipstick, and my Vixen enamel nail polish that I actually just gave to my sister-in-law because she was obsessed with it and it’s the best colour. It’s like a deep burgundy. I’ve been using Vixen for 12 years. It’s one of their older colours and it really is the perfect colour.

In a previous episode of Hockey Wives, Keshia Chanté© told you that long distance relationships don’t work. Now that you have been in one, how would you respond to her?

I think I would respond the same way as I did in the summer: I don’t listen to anyone, I just do my thing. If it works for me, it’s going to work. Everybody’s different. Some people can’t do long distance relationships but in my case, it happened to be really good. I think that Brandon and I are closer now than we were last year because every single moment we have together is special. You cherish them and you appreciate them so much more. I love my long distance relationship but it’s not for everybody and I realize that. She’s right to have her opinion. I disagree with it but I feel like everybody should do what feels right for them.

So you love having a long distance relationship but if you could have your choice, would you want to continue with it?

You know what I’m scared of? Moving back with him. After his career, I’m scared of having him at the house because we’ve never really been together. Even when he was playing in Montreal, he would still go on the road so he would be gone a day or two a week. So what is it going to be like when we are actually in the same house all the time? That’s when shit’s gonna go down. But, we’re going to find a way to make it work. I can’t see myself with anyone else”he’s stuck with me.

Have you guys been able to make any wedding plans?

No, we’re so far from it. He’s going to be a free agent at the end of this season so we’re hoping for a trade before the trade deadline. It’s been a rough year for him. When he hurt his ankle and I was in Quebec City shooting my TV show, I called the doctor for the team right away and was like, “Is he okay? How bad is it?” He was in an air cast for like a week and a half. He couldn’t walk around, couldn’t get groceries, and I was stuck in Quebec. That was tough. At that moment, I felt like I should have been with him.

Do you like hockey?

I like hockey because that’s what he does but I wouldn’t be like, Okay let’s all go watch the game together! I’ll watch it if it’s on TV but if the Kardashians are on, I’ll switch it.

Do you get nervous watching him play?

I do. It’s kind of tough because it’s such a fast game and injuries are so bad. So it’s kind of nerve-wracking. Every time he steps on the ice people are like, Oh my god, are you scared? but when he fights is actually when I’m the least scared because I know he’s good at it. He has long arms and he’s in control. He knows what he’s doing. But when you get hit on the boards, you don’t have control. I hate it.

Other articles I’ve read about you have called you a firecracker and say that you may be tougher than Brandon. Do you agree with them?

Yeah, I think I’m the badass in my relationship (laughing). No, I pretend that I am. I’m a big softie. I cry all the time, I’m really sensitive, and I’m really emotional. Brandon is more like a rock. He’s really solid and I think that’s why we’re a good balance. I’m the emotional side and he’s the more rational.

Well, you just exude confidence all day long and no one would ever guess that you’re a big softie. What do you do to stay so confident?

It’s funny because when I was younger, I felt like I had more self-confidence than I do now. I feel like working on TV makes you so self-conscious. I started having skin problems recently so it kind of affected my self-confidence but at the end of the day, it’s not how you look, it’s not what you wear”it’s how you make people feel. That’s what I’ve realized gives me self-confidence. When I make people laugh and when they’re happy to be around me, it makes me feel so good about myself. Once you start focusing on that, it changes your whole perspective and it actually changes the way you see life. It’s only recently that I realized this and it literally changed everything”how I see life, how I love people. It’s really powerful.

How did he propose?

We didn’t tell that story to anyone. We’re not really talking about it¦ but he did it in Naples, Italy.
