Spring 2011: How to Work Bright Lips

Candy-coloured lips were everywhere on the spring runways. Lucky for beauty junkies, the diversity of eye-popping hues provide an array to choose from to suit your skin tone. We’ve got the tips to help you look like you just stepped out of Candyland without looking like Katy Perry overkill é  la California Girls.

Pink suits both skin tones.
For cool skin tones: Choose a pink with a hint of purple. If you’re feeling bold, you can’t go wrong with a classic hot pink, like Dior Addict Lipstick in Singulié¨re, $28.

For warm skin tones: Choose a pink with a peach base. Or try a softer rosy pink, like NARS Lipstick in Promiscuous, $24.

Fuchsia suits cool skin tones best.
For cool skin tones: Choose a fuchsia with a pink or purple base, like Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense in Satin Fuchsia, $19.

For warm skin tones: Fuchsia’s a tricky colour to wear if cool tones don’t suit your complexion. Try a sheer lip gloss to help your natural lip colour shine through, or aim for a fuchsia that has more of a coral or peach base instead of a pink, like Bare Escentuals bareMinerals Natural Lipcolor in Strawberry Daiquiri, $15.

Orange suits warm skin tones best.
For cool skin tones: This is a tough one, ladies. Orange can bring out the pink in your skin tone and clash with your complexion if it’s a bright. Aim for a pinky-orange, or a sheer peach lip colour, like Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Mega Melon, $15.

For warm skin tones: Orange lights you up, bringing out your skin’s natural gold undertones. Try a reddish orange if you’re not feeling committed to a tangerine pout, but if you’re feeling the trend, slick on a bright like Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick in A-Go-Go, $18.

Red suits both skin tones.
For cool skin tones: Choose a pink- or purple-based red. You can’t go wrong with a classic like Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté© in Red Temptation, $34.

For warm skin tones: Choose a deep or orange-based red. Also try one with gold flecks to bring out your skin’s gold tones, like Sephora Collection Lip Attitude in Capricious Red 14, $12.

Coral suits all skin tones.
If you’re feeling stumped and your hand’s more decorated than a graffitied subway car from all of the lipstick samples, coral’s a solid bet. This bright is universally-flattering, and any lip colour that makes your skin glow is a timeless classic. Sephora Collection Lip Attitude in Coral Croquette, $12, is a great go-to.
