Nailing the Look at Fashion Week!

We caught up with the Essie ladies backstage to get a closer look at the manicures.

Q&A: Rita Remark, Lead Essie Nail Artist for World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto

29: Do you have a favourite look?

RR: I love the idea that all the designers have gravitated toward texture as opposed to real intricate nail design. I feel like it is more of a DIY, because people can do it at home. It helps to match the nails to the clothing as well.

29: Do you work with the designers to plan the nail looks?

RR: I do, we generally will meet or talk over the phone and they’ll send me images. It depends, some designers are really collaborative and will like to have my input where as other designers are extremely organized and know exactly what they are looking for. As soon as the proofs are made, I send them over to Essie and they send me the shades and I get to work!

29: How do you predict nail trends?

RR: I always find that real nail trends start in the music world, then fashion and Hollywood will pick up on it and then it becomes a massive trend. If I see Rihanna wearing square nails, in a couple seasons from now, guess what? Square will be back!

29: Do you have a favourite Essie colour?

RR: I don’t have a favourite colour, but I am obsessed with our Matte About You top coat! With any colour it gives it a velvety matte finish. It is contemporary and I think it is a great way to change the colours you already own into something for fall/winter.

29: What are you wearing on your nails now?

RR: It is the Essie Sleek Sticks, and today I am wearing So Haute. What I like about these is they stand up to nail polish remover, so it is great when I am working on nails backstage.
