The Long and Short of It

It happens nearly every spring without fail: as soon as the weather loses its winter chill I start dreaming of the sun-dappled days of summer. From flipping through trashy magazines on the beach to sipping sangria on rooftop patios, I love how invigorating and fresh the summer feels. Which may be why I always get the urge to do something drastic to my hair. It must be the intoxicating mix of the hot sun and the stifling humidity that makes me want to shed my long, heavy winter layers. I usually lose my nerve before I hit my stylist’s chair but this season’s hottest hair trend may let me make a dramatic cut without chopping it all off.

The Lob (or Long Bob) has been popping up on everyone from Nicole Richie to Karlie Kloss to the Man Repeller herself, Leandra Medine. Our favourite fashionistas are embracing this style, which combines the chicness of the classic bob with the versatility of longer layers.

Who looks best with a lob?

Everyone! The great thing about The Lob is that it is almost universally flattering. Layers that hit below the jaw line look best on rounder faces and the extra layers will help widen a more narrow face.

What to ask for

Many of the coolest Lobs are a bit longer in the front so ask your stylist to angle the cut slightly. I also find it really helpful to bring in photos of my dream ‘do because a picture speaks a thousand words when I’m not totally sure what I should be asking for.

Maintenance

The Lob looks great worn sleek and straight, but it also looks amazing with some tousled beach-y waves. I love a low-maintenance style, especially in the summer when the last thing any girl wants to do is spend quality time with her blow dryer. But be warned, The Lob does require frequent trims (as with any shorter hairstyle, every few weeks is recommended) to keep the ends looking neat and clean.

So while I may never work up the courage to truly chop it all off, I think The Lob may be a chic way for me to enjoy the ease and comfort of short hair this summer without the commitment. Let us know in the comments if you would try The Lob.
