When done right, nude lipstick can be uniquely sexy à la Beyonce or Scarlett Johansson. But done wrong, nude lipstick can make you look more like the Crypt Keeper. To learn how to really rock nude lips be sure to follow these dos and don’ts.
DO choose a nude lipstick that is within two shades of your natural lip colour. Otherwise, it just isn’t nude.
DO make sure to exfoliate your lips before beginning your makeup routine. Take a cue from Heidi Klum and lightly scrub your lips with a toothbrush to slough off dead skin and create a full pout.
DO use a lip balm or moisturizing primer before applying lipstick. Nude lipsticks tend to be chalkier so this will allow for smoother application. It will also help keep your lips hydrated throughout the day or night.
DO add a dab of gloss after applying nude lipstick to create volume and prevent creasing.
DO play up your eyes with a smoky, metallic shadow or defined brows. If you’re normally a little fearful of a dark, dramatic eye, now is your time to smolder!
DO apply a peach or bronze blush to the apples of your cheeks to keep your face looking vibrant.
DON’T choose a colour that is lighter than your natural shade. This will make you appear washed out and sickly.
DON’T use a frosted lipstick. Anything with a frosty finish will make your lips appear small and thin.
DON’T apply foundation to your lips before or after applying a nude lipstick. Going matte with nude lipstick may work on the runways but for day-to-day wear it can make lips appear dry and shriveled.
DON’T use lip liner unless it is exactly the same shade as your lipstick. The idea is to look natural – not painted.
DON’T forget to brush your teeth! A pale lip colour can make teeth appear yellowish so make sure to polish those pearly whites. Or, if you really want to shine, try a teeth-whitening product like Crest Whitestrips
Choosing the Best Nude Hue for Your Skin Shade
Fair: If you’re a fair skinned beauty, stick with a rosy, pink-tined nude lipstick like Smashbox’s Flawless.
Golden: Those with golden undertones should opt for light, creamy beiges like Crème d’Nude by MAC.
Olive: Girls with olive skin have got it good – they can pull off nearly any nude shade. For a neutral nude, try Revlon’s Nude Attitude.
Dark: For dark skin, indulge in rich, gold-brown lipsticks like Bobbi Brown’s Cocoa.
