Goodbye Unicorn Hair, Hello Petrol Blue

Blue hair has certainly been in the air: on our Instagram feeds (thanks to Guy Tang‘s page of unicorn hair transformations) and in stores with the launch of Technicolor-level hair dyes. But the petrol blue hair at Fendi’s spring 2018 runway show last week (seen on model/It girl Kaia Gerber above) might have been the push blue hair needs to become a full-blown #instatrend.

Garnier Canada hair expert Roger Medina says the days of pastel locks are coming to an end, in favour of darker jewel tones. “We’re seeing more mermaid-like colours, where the colour is deeper,” says Medina. “It’s less pastel, more vibrant.” So before everyone else gets their hands and heads coloured an indigo hue, we’ve gathered the best semi-permanent hair dyes ranging from teal to blue-black, so you can DIY the season’s freshest new ˜do.

Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Semi-Permanent Fantasy Hair Color, Blue Smoke (US $16) The unicorn locks you’ve seen on Instagram were likely a product of Lime Crime’s Unicorn Hair Fantasy Hair Color. The colour Blue Smoke offers up a steely blue shade that’s surprisingly wearable, while the vegan formula will leave hair as smooth and silky as a meadow and fade gracefully.

Clairol Color Crave Semi-Permanent Hair Color, Indigo ($10) It’s quick and easy to change things up with Clairol Color Crave Semi-Permanent Hair Color. Lasting around 15 washes, this inky blue colour stays bold for two weeks and then gradually fades out.

goodDYEyoung Semi-Permanent Hair Color, Blue Ruin ($14 USD) For the rebel at heart, goodDYEyoung Semi-Permanent Hair Color by Paramore singer Hayley Williams comes in a rainbow of colours with the perfect vibrancy. With a vegan formula, eco-friendly packaging, and a message promoting self-love, this one’s hard to beat. The shade Blue Ruin will get you an out-of-this-world “comicbook blue.”

L’Oré©al Paris Colorista Semi-Permanent Hair Colour, Indigo ($13) Imagine sporting an indigo ˜do one week and brown the next. With the L’Oré©al Paris Colorista Semi-Permanent Hair Colour you can do just that. The colour fades in four to 10 washes so you can mix up your look as often as you’d like.

Arctic Fox Semi-Permanent Hair Dye, Poseidon ($8 USD) Get a vivid, electric blue with the Poseidon shade from Arctic Fox Semi-Permanent Hair Dye, which has a a 100% vegan formula. If you’re going to share your dyed locks on social media be sure to use their hashtag #DyeForACause.

Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color, 310 Darkest Blue ($11) Part of the Midnight Blacks Collection, this inky shade is specifically made for dark hair to add vivid blue black tones with mirror-like shine. The permanent colour lasts for up to eight weeks while nourishing hair with a blend of avocado, olive and shea oils.

Manic Panic After Midnight High Voltage Classic Cream ($14 USD) This super-pigmented vegan hair dye is what brought us Kylie Jenner’s highlighter yellow hair at Coachella this summer. Late last year, the Manic Panic After Midnight High Voltage Classic Cream landed Nylon’s 2017 beauty hit list for best hair colour. The After Midnight shade delivers a deep, teal blue.
