Beauty Review: Garnier Fructis Sleek and Shine Blow Dry Perfection Smoothing Kit

We test out the latest way to make your blow-out last.

What it is:
Garnier’s Sleek and Shine Blow Dry Perfection Smoothing Kit
, $12.99, is a two step kit that maximizes lasting results from your blow-dry. According to Garnier, your hair will be resistant to the frizzies for up to seven shampoos. The kit comes with two tubes (a wash-out smoothing serum and a leave-in sealing cream) as well as plastic gloves and easy to follow instructions.

How it works:
The first step, the Smooth-It Serum, is a chemical liquid formula that relaxes the kink or wave in your hair. The second step (ie, the Perfect-It Cream) is a leave-in conditioning formula made of rice oil and polymers to coat your hair so it resists frizz. The ingredients are heat-activated with a blow-dryer, so air-drying is not an option.

How to use it:
Once you shampoo, skip out on your regular conditioner and instead apply the Smooth-it Serum to your hair with the gloves provided. Comb it in for even distribution, then leave in for 20 minutes. Rinse out with warm water and towel dry your hair. Then apply a generous amount of the Perfect-It Cream based on your hair’s length; short-haired girls may not need the whole tube. (FYI, the serum has a distinct pungent smell, so if you have a sensitivity to scent, you might want to skip it. But the Perfect-It Cream smells fresh and citrus-like).

Begin blow drying sections of the hair with a round brush until hair is completely dry. For optimal results, after the first blow dry, use a flat iron for extra sleek hair.  I found it easier to stretch out my hair with my brush and found it took less time to flat iron my troublesome, curlier layers that usually kink up unless I run the flat iron over them half a dozen times.

And the verdict is:
“I used Garnier’s Smooth-it Kit the Thursday before I flew out to a humid weekend in New York (temperatures soared 39 degrees celsius with the humidex!). Usually, my hair becomes a hot mess in extreme heat, but my hair was less frizzy and remained smooth considering the long days of sightseeing in the sun.  As well, my straight style easily transformed when I used my large barrel curling iron for a night out with the girls. Although, I was due for a wash after Saturday’s wavy-affair (only a day longer than my usual shampoo schedule), on my next blow dry it still felt easier to smooth out my strands, so the kit does what it says.”

Is it worth the hype:
“Yes, I’d use the kit again, although I wish it took less time. I have long, thick, curly hair, so it took about 90 minutes from start to finish of the entire process. But, the results are worth the time.”

My daughter and I used this product and it destroyed our hair. My daughter is still going to the salon for treatments and had to have 4 inches cut off. I also live in Florida and would like to do something about this. I called the company and they sent me an envelope of coupons for their products. Do you believe this. I am not through with them yet.

I used the Garnier Blow Out kit on my 12yr old, who has very wavy hair that puffs up in humid conditions. Normally it takes a dreadful 2¹/²hours to wash, blow dry and flat iron her hair. I must say that I’m really pleased with the results. Her blow dry time was cut to only 20 mins, and her flat ironing time was about an hour and her hair looks fantastic. I don’t know if those of you who’ve had bad results, used a certain type of shampoo? But I used a low sulfate, keratin shampoo by Suave, after the blow drying I also used Garnier triple nutrition spray and Garnier brilliante shine before flat ironing with a Chi flat iron.
The results as I said are phenomenal, I live in Houston so the humidity here is terrible all year long so this product helps BIG TIME. °The only down fall is that my house reeked to high hell.

Oh my god! Three weeks ago when I called Fructis in tears that my hair was melting off of my head, they said this was the first that they had heard about it. Today, once again crying in the mirror trying to do something with the mess I now called my hair I googled to see if anyone else has happen. To my amazment there are. I kept the product, melted hair, wads of it, and all receipts and near future for hair care. We really do need a class action suit. I live in Toronto and almost drove to their Montreal head office to show them how they ruined my hair. I have the proof, my melted hair with their product all over it. It started melting my hair immediately and I ran screaming to the shower to wash it out as fast as I can. This has been an extremely traumatic event for me and I feel really need to go after them.
Has anybody gone after them are is trying. I would love to talk with you

I have used the Chi Iron Guard for the past year, but the Shielo Antioxidant Leave in Protectant is MUCH better. The Chi Iron Guard makes my hair sticky and dry. This Shielo spray seems so vitamin-enriched, it’s super lightweight and makes my hair smooth and shiny, plus IT SMELLS AMAZING!!!! I want to wear it as perfume. LOL. The Chi Iron Guard doesn’t smell good at all. Honestly this stuff hasn’t only protected my hair from heat, but makes my hair look so much more healthy. I’m so happy I found this!
By the way, I have wavy, fine hair. Hair that curls/frizzes when exposed to humidity or wet. So, this definitely works on my type of hair.

    Hi Tracey and ladies,
First off I just want to say sorry for the horrible experience you had with this product. I have quite thick hair and I only used this product the one time so I didn’t experience the same damage. As mentioned the smell was bad when I used it and I found that the most difficult thing about it. I have not used the product since, and I found my hair was fine when I used it the one time. If you have thin hair and find you experience issues with products with Thiol then perhaps you should stay away.
I hope you guys fare better with other products. Here are my two  favourite  smoothing products:
My favourite straightening balm is the Living Proof No Frizz Straightening Cream (which I reviewed quite a while ago and purchase on the regular now). You just apply it to wet hair and blow dry. Easy peasy.
I also like using botanical oil based products, just a pump  or a few drops of them adds so much moisture an seals the hair shaft while retoring hair’s dryness (so great for winter)! Moroccanoil is a cult favourite, but Shu Umera’s Essence Absolue is my personal favourite as it has a nice fragrance to it as well (due to the Camelia oil).
Botanical oils are healthier for your hair than any straightening balm. They add a great amount of moisture to keep your hair smooth. Just be careful not to overuse either of these two smoothing products because then your becomes greasy and prone to buildup. Hope that helps!

I’m not sure what I like about this product more at the moment… The fact my hair now smells like rotten eggs… or the fact that it is dry and brittle and at the slightest touch falls off… Horrible product. I decided to read reviews after putting it on and noticing the rotten egg smell and seen the horrible comments and washed it off I probably had this on for 5 mins and the damage it was able to do in that little time is impressive. PLEASE FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR HAIR DO NOT USE!!!

VERY AWFUL PRODUCT TO HAVE ON THE SHELVES!!! THIS DISGUSTS THAT GARNIER IS STILL SELLING THIS STUFF, S PECIALLY AFTER ALL THESE HORRIBLE REVIEWS.

But people don’t like to read. If your hair was actually healthy and not damaged from coloring and bleaching it wouldn’t mess your hair up. Just because it may be soft before doesn’t mean there isn’t some damage done to it that reacted badly to the hair color you have. People just want someone to blame for their stupidity. 🙁

I unfortunately tried this product and it ruined my hair. I had also purchased the Organix Brazilian Keratin hair straightener but used the Garnier first because it seemed like a quicker simpler task and thought if I didn’t like it, well it would at least wash out in 7 washes. It does NOT WASH OUT. I threw out the box and don’t know what harsh ingredients are in it but it fried my hair. I look as if I am some white trash woman who has over processed her hair to be white blonde so it looks cheap, dry, thin, just plain nasty.
I have to cut at least 3 inches off now as the ends are permanently stuck on this frizz condition. No amount of straightening, professional conditioning, curling, blow-drying, or humidity level will change the state. It just has to be cut off.
Please spread the word, text your friends. Put this on Facebook. Don’t let anyone use this if you care about them. You might as well just put NAIR ON YOUR HEAD as you will get the same result and it is a little cheaper!

yes step 1 stinks, but as soon as you rinse it out the smell goes away.
the directions say wash & do not condition. I used just a touch of condition before step 1.
I have a BOB ,so I only used 1/4 of each product.
Mine turned out nice, but after reading comments am concerned using a second time might be too much and ruin my hair. Yikes

This stuff should have been removed from shelves. I won’t be surprised if a class action lawsuit is opened so girls keep your receipts. I put this shit on my hair for about one and a half minutes and started to comb through my hair and noticed it spliting frying and falling out. I immediately washed out as soon as I notices this mess. I am extremely pissed. My hair around my crown looks like straw that is fried on the ends. I feel sorry for the girls that used this shit for the full twenty minutes. It ruined my hair after no more than 2 minutes after being applied.

I used this product and had really good results. My hair is naturally very frizzy and rough..I have some split ends from constant blowdrying. I used the product and it kept my hair soft and manageable for about a week and a half. I DID NOT however use the entire bottle because it seemed like way too much (and I have long hair halfway down my back).
ALSO, it clearly states on the package to NOT use if you dye or bleach your hair…which is why some people have negative feedback about it.
JUST read the directions before you use it.

I tried the product. I am biracial with naturally curly hair. I get a Brazilian Blowout done ($250) as often as I can (2-3times/year.) I used the Sleek and Shine stuff to try and prolong the results of the BB and it does help a little. All of the above comments are right, the Smooth it serum stinks. BUT I think it has helped me prolong my expensive salon treatment by about 2 months. For $11 and the bad smell, it’s worth it.

DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!!!! I have always had incredible healthy hair. Stylists have always commented on how healthy it is. Now, most of my hair is falling out, and what is left looks like yarn! I had previously worked in an Onclolgy unit, and I have seen how chemotherapy affects the hair, and this hair loss is exactly the same, I look for it all to fall out within the month! What am I supposed to do??? THe more I comb it, which is incredibly difficult at best, handfuls are coming out!!!!!! Please help with any suggestions!!!

THIS PRODUCT IS AWFUL! I have naturally curly hair, but very fine hair. It made my hair SO dry it was disgusting. I could barely run my fingers through it. NOW, 3 weeks later- I HAVE DANDRUFF! I’ve never had a dry scalp in my whole life! I would NOT recommend this to anyone ever even for a quick fix. IT IS NOT WORTH IT!
My suggestion, if you want smooth and straighter hair than usual, find a salon that offers KERATIN EXPRESS. It is MUCH cheaper than the regular keratin treatment. At my salon it is 75$ compared to $300! It makes your hair silky and shiny! It last 4-6 weeks. It is not damaging AT ALL and will actually improve the condition of your hair. Also, some people noted the funky relaxer smell that the Garnier gives off… the Keratin express actually smells like tootsie rolls! After having it applied, you don’t wash it out- the hair stylist will straighten your hair and leave the keratin in. You can’t get it wet for 24 hours or put it in a pony tail or pin it– anything that will make a crease. That is the only aggravating thing. But it has amazing results — SO DON’T BE CHEAP PEOPLE! Get the Keratin and save yourself the STRESS of having dry, brittle hair!

From my knowledge of heat protector sprays as long as you apply the heat protector spray to wet hair it should be safe and possible for you to get the results of the Garnier product by using the spray along with the Garnier kit. Heat protection sprays protect the hair shaft from burning when heat styling and keep it soft and hydrated, so the addition of this spray will enhance the smooth texture of your hair.

    Hope this helps!

After reading about this product I really do want to try it! I have naturally curly hair so when I straighten it in the summer the humidity and heat just ruins it and it tends to go frizzy. Thanks for the info!

I AGREE. DO NOT USE THIS. MY HAIR WAS ALWAYS SOFT BUT LIVING IN FLORIDA, THE HUMITITY GETS TO IT AND IT IS HARD TO KEEP IT STRAIGHT. I HAVE A LITTLE WAVE TO MY HAIR. THE STUFF STINKS LIKE THE OLD PERMS USED TO. I GOT PAST THAT. BUT MY HAIR FEELS TERRIBLE NOW. IT IS DRY AND BRITTLE AND BREAKING OFF ALOT. I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO AND I DONT WANT TO CUT IT OFF. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO WEAR SHORT HAIR. HAS ANYONE HAD ANY LUCK FIXING THIS MESS. HAVE THEY SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THE DAMAGE THEY HAVE CAUSED?

I didn’t entirely use up either product. Directions say to toss & not reuse. My question – can I hold on to what is left & use again, or does the product actually have to be thrown away after it is opened.
